Where Have They Gone

How many times do we have to hear how important it is to tell people we love them NOW, because there may be no tomorrow? This song was written for two very dear people, both of whom had tremendous impact on my life and both of whom died at a very young age, before I had the chance to tell them what they meant to me. The night time closes in so quickly and always unexpected.
For Tom and Jane
Oh, brother, where have you gone?
Oh, brother, where have you gone?
Two blackbirds in a flock of doves,
Drawn to one another,
I can still hear all our music echoing.
Although the years fell in between us,
And all the long miles,
I was always so sure we'd sing one more song.
Oh, brother, where have you gone?
Where have you gone?
Oh, sister, where have you gone?
Oh, sister, where have you gone?
Your eyes were a lovely fire
Burning deep into me,
When the wind was high and we were shivering.
It never took all that much to make you happy,
But I had next to nothing.
I sang a lot of pretty words
Then I moved along.
Oh, sister, where have you gone?
Where have you gone?
Oh, Father, where have they gone?
Oh, Father, where have they gone?
The night time closes in so quickly,
And always unexpected,
And when it does, the day is just a memory.
Are they going to be there waiting,
When I stand before you?
Or will this be that long night
That will have no dawn?
Oh, Father, where have they gone?
Where have they gone?
