All the Ancient Hills

Someone said these stony Balkan mountains will remain
When all else falls to ashes.
They say that the hills of Sarajevo
Will be standing when the last great kingdom passes.
There is pride and there’s rebellion
In the faces and the souls we seek to call.
But I can tell you, nothing we know lasts forever
The rivers will run dry and all the ancient hills will fall.

Long ago these cities heard the Spirit calling
Long ago the Spirit passed and darkness fell.
Countless wars have raged and souls have cried out age to age;
Human hearts hemmed in by hounds of hell.
In the faces and the eyes you see a longing
For a hope unnamed, a name they cannot call…
Though at times these hearts seem stony as the mountains,
The rivers will run dry and all the ancient hills will fall.

God is taking back the valleys and the hills,
Heart by broken heart and one soul at a time
Any time now we might hear the trumpet calling,
See the mountains falling…

Someone said the people of these mountains
Are too distant and far from our concerns;
That we can’t understand these foreign streets and alleys
Or affect the way an ancient river runs.
But nothing facing us is hopeless
Though the enemy stands strong at every wall.
We will see that no dark fortress stands forever
The rivers will run dry and all the ancient hills will fall.
