Just Like You Mean It

There have been times -- many of them -- when I step away from myself long enough to be amazed that my wife has continued to love me despite what she knows about me. And out beyond that, God knows so much more. And loves me even more. I am really, completely, continually amazed by Grace.
I always play around the edges
I always hang back in the distance
You’ve seen me slip and fall from ledges
But, at your insistence, I come back around.
I come back around.

My heart runs like a wide rushing river
On a blind stumbling flight to the ocean
And tumbles hard down through deep, stoney canyons
A restless motion is just its nature.
That’s just its nature.

I don’t know how to love like you love me.
I don’t know how to love like I feel it.
I don’t know how you can love me
When you know me like you know me:
But I’ve seen it;
I’ve seen you love me like you mean it.
Just like you mean it.

I shy away from your intentions
Mask my reactions and expressions
Cover my tracks with wild inventions
And my confessions always come up lame.
They come up lame.

I don’t know how to love like you love me.
I don’t know how to love like I feel it.
I don’t know how you can love me
When you know me like you know me:
But I’ve seen it;
I’ve seen you love me like you mean it.
Just like you mean it.

You’ve heard me cry out in my weakness
With groans too deep for words to fathom.
You are my judge you are my witness
You know the passion and you know the pain.
You know the pain.
